Dr. Shruti Tapiawala — Senior Consultant in Mumbai

Dr. Shruti Tapiawala is a Senior Consultant at Gleneagles Hospital in Mumbai, with more than 25 years of experience in nephrology.

Her list covers chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, lupus nephritis, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome and polycystic kidney disease, haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, percutaneous renal biopsy, and transplant care from pre-transplant evaluation through follow-up and graft dysfunction management.

She took her MD in internal medicine at B.Y.L. Nair Hospital and T.N. Medical College in Mumbai and the DNB in nephrology. Three fellowships follow, and all three are transplant or dialysis focused. Her two-year adult nephrology fellowship at the University Health Network in Toronto centred on home haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and lupus nephritis, all three of which remain on her list. She then held a multi-organ transplant fellowship of the American Society of Transplantation, and a fellowship in HLA medicine and advanced transplant diagnostics at Toronto Medical Labs.

That last fellowship is the unusual one. HLA medicine is the tissue-matching science that decides whether a donor and recipient are compatible, and a nephrologist trained in it brings the laboratory side of transplantation into the clinic.

Her paper prizes span a decade of Indian Society of Nephrology meetings: first place for best oral presentation at the 32nd annual conference in December 2001, first place for best oral paper at the annual conference in 2011, and two second places at west zone chapter conferences. She has published on systemic sclerosis with lung involvement, on electrocardiographic diagnosis and on ophthalmic manifestations in HIV infection, and previously worked at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.
