Dr. K. S. Somasekhar Rao — Clinical Director in Hyderabad

Dr. K. S. Somasekhar Rao is Clinical Director and Senior Consultant Medical Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Yashoda Hospitals, Hi-Tech City, Hyderabad, with more than 19 years of experience in gastroenterology and hepatobiliary medicine.

The liver takes up most of his list. He manages chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis B and C and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Beyond the liver he manages inflammatory bowel disease with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, chronic pancreatitis, gallstones, recurrent GI bleeding and severe gastroesophageal reflux disease.

His training is dated and moves across three states. He read MBBS at Andhra Medical College in Visakhapatnam in 2001, took his MD in general medicine through the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in 2007 and his DM in gastroenterology at Sri Ramachandra University in Chennai in 2012.

His posts follow the same route. He has worked at Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences in Gannavaram, at Vydehi Medical College in Whitefield, Bangalore, at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Apollo Hospitals on Greams Road in Chennai, and at Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad from 2014 to 2023 before his present post.

His recognition comes largely from media and industry awards rather than academic bodies: a Best Doctor Award in gastroenterology at the 7th Hi9 Doctors Awards in 2019, an Indian Leadership Award the same year, a Service Excellence in Hepatology Award at Times Health Excellence Hyderabad for 2020–21, Indian Icon of the Year in 2021, a Most Trusted Medical Gastroenterologist Award in February 2022 and Ikon in Gastroenterology from Times Health in 2022.

He is a member of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology and the Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and has published on gastric emptying by scintigraphy in non-ulcer dyspepsia.
