Dr. Bharat Gopal — Senior Director of Respiratory & Sleep Medicine in Delhi NCR

Dr. Bharat Gopal is Senior Director of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Medanta - The Medicity in Delhi NCR, with more than 27 years of experience across pulmonology and sleep medicine.

His list covers all three parts of his title. The interventional work is diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, transbronchial needle aspiration, cryo-lung biopsy, airway stenting and medical pleural procedures. The medical work covers severe asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, complex pulmonary infection and post-tuberculosis lung disease. The sleep work covers obstructive sleep apnea evaluation, polysomnography and CPAP titration.

He holds MBBS, an MD in respiratory medicine and TB, the DNB in pulmonary medicine, MNAMS, and a fellowship in interventional pulmonology.

Two entries on his record are firsts rather than qualifications. He is described as a pioneer of endobronchial ultrasound guided procedures and lung cryobiopsies in India, and of home-based polysomnography in Delhi. Both techniques appear on his own list, so the pioneering work and the current practice are the same procedures.

His teaching extends past his hospital. He founded the "Pulmo-Pathshala" series for training doctors in interventional pulmonology across India, and he has been a key contributor to national guidelines on asthma, COPD, bronchoscopy and community-acquired pneumonia. He has authored over 30 scientific publications and textbook chapters.

The National College of Chest Physicians gave him its Young Scientist Award and the Delhi State branch of the IMA the Vashisht Chikatsak Award. He also practises at Medanta Gurugram and Medanta Mediclinic in Defence Colony.
