Dr. Prasanna Kumar Thomas — Senior Consultant in Chennai

Dr. Prasanna Kumar Thomas is a Senior Consultant at MGM Healthcare in Chennai, with more than 40 years of experience in pulmonology.

His list is medical respiratory work. He manages chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, severe asthma, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease and complex pulmonary infection, together with drug-resistant tuberculosis and post-tuberculosis lung disease, and he performs airway stenting.

His three degrees were all taken at Madras Medical College in Chennai over eight years. He read MBBS in 1978, took the DTCD, the diploma in tuberculosis and chest diseases, in 1982, and his MD in tuberculosis and chest diseases in 1986. Both postgraduate qualifications are named for tuberculosis, which was how the specialty was organised at the time he entered it, and his list still carries both the drug-resistant form of the disease and the damage it leaves in the lungs afterward.

More than four decades of practice since that MD places him among the longest-serving physicians in the specialty on this platform.

His memberships cover the field at three levels. He belongs to the Tamilnadu Association of Pulmonologists at state level, the Indian Medical Association nationally, and the European Respiratory Society and the American Thoracic Society internationally. Two international respiratory societies alongside a state association describe a practice that has kept contact with the wider field while staying in one city.
