What is Microvascular Free Flap Reconstruction?
Common donor sites include the forearm, thigh and lower leg (fibula) for bone. Each flap has a named artery and vein that must be joined to recipient vessels in the neck or near the defect. The donor site is a second surgical wound with its own healing needs. A local flap rotates nearby tissue; a free flap is detached and reconnected. Soft-tissue flaps restore lining and bulk; bone flaps restore a jaw segment. Two surgical teams often work together: one completing the cancer resection, one raising and joining the flap.
