What is Heller Myotomy for Achalasia?
Heller myotomy divides the tight lower-oesophageal sphincter muscle through an abdominal approach so swallowed food can enter the stomach in selected achalasia. Usually laparoscopically, the circular muscle at the oesophagogastric junction is divided onto the stomach for a planned distance. A partial Dor or Toupet fundoplication is often constructed to reduce reflux.
